Quotations and drawing.   Written by MandyN (4/1/2006 10:51 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch.1: Two questions: on poetry, and what JA meant, penned by Line
Are you new?

Well, I don't know if this is of any help but that line from
Pope is from his 'Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady'
(1717).
I don't know if 'mockery of woe' is supposed to suggest the fate of heroines.

The quote by Gray is slightly misquoted ie 'frgrance' for 'sweetness'.

Thomson's lines from 'The Seasons' (1730) are slightly misquoted.

I'm unsure if this is a comment by JA about Catherine's education.

My impression was Catherine learnt to draw at an early age, but her drawings perhaps weren't good enough to show strangers ie she was not an accomplished at drawing.
