in consequence of the missive, MP surprises to a first-time reader (very LONG – sorry!), penned by Cathy Allen
Before this GR, I had only watched MP1 ONE time (several years ago). Unlike ALL the other JA novels, for which I had seen the movie adaptations several times before reading the books, so that I was completely familiar with the story, I went into it almost as an "innocent reader," and had many surprises. My conclusions:
Because of JA's writing, I simply LOVED Mrs. Norris and Lady B. They made me laugh many times, and I did not expect that. Indolence and Nastiness are not innately funny, but JA made them so.
Henry Crawford is a considerably worse man than I thought. Rotten, actually. He got a little better, but then he destroyed it all.
Edmund disappointed me a little; he was not quite as much a hero as I thought, from viewing the movie.
Mary Crawford disappointed me considerably. The movie made me like her a little, but I was taken in, just like Edmund and everyone else, by a pretty face!
Fanny was a true heroine, in my eyes. I like and admire her much better than I did in the movie.
In conclusion, as with all JA's novels, the book is SO MUCH BETTER than the movie adaptations it is hard to believe! I really recommend the audio books: you get every single word JA wrote; you can create your own images of the characters -- perhaps from the movies? -- of how they look; you don't have to put up with any Director's "version" of JA :-( and JA and her family read them to each other at home, so they are presented in the way they were meant to be presented. You can't get much better than that! And, if you buy them through an RoP link, RoP will get a small percentage.
Thank you, Carol, and everyone. I've enjoyed this GR very much!
