Susan   Written by Ramya (10/25/2010 4:03 p.m.)
Are you new?

JA wraps up the action well at the of the story, not neglecting even the minor characters that we have become aware of and grown fond of so close to the end of the tale. And so, we are told the fate of Susan: Susan became the stationary niece, delighted to be so; Chap 48.

In many ways, Fanny was an experiment for the Bertrams. Now, Susan is going to benefit from all the lessons learned in bringing up Fanny. Susan's personality is also quite different from Fanny's- she is neither shy nor reserved. She has the added advantage of Fanny's company, a New&Improved! Sir Thomas, and perhaps, most importantly, the absence of Mrs. Nasty.

Her more fearless disposition and happier nerves made everything easy to her there. With quickness in understanding the tempers of those she had to deal with, and no natural timidity to restrain any consequent wishes, she was soon welcome and useful to all.

We can be sure that she won't be confined to a fire-less white attic, and she will be brought "out" at the proper time, nor will she be subjected to differential treatment. I am sure Fanny and Edmund will spoil her in a good way! However, she is still a poor dependant, and has to be a companion for Lady Bertram.

We are told that, she succeeded so naturally to her influence over the hourly comfort of her aunt, as gradually to become, perhaps, the most beloved of the two.

This line always makes me feel a little sad! I feel that Fanny deserved to have been more beloved to her aunt because she had to put up with so much more and struggle against so many things! But that's so typical of life, I guess!

Finally, here's something to think about: First as a comfort to Fanny, then as an auxiliary, and last as her substitute, [Susan] was established at Mansfield, with every appearance of equal permanency.

Is that a hint about a future romance between Tom and Susan? The age-difference would be great, but JA doesn't shy away from such pairings...
