only a loss to Henry

Maria may have thought she was making Fanny lose Henry, but she was mistaken. I have thought that passage was mainly Maria rejoicing in Henry's loss of Fanny. After all, Fanny never entertained a "hope" of marriage to Crawford, but rather a dread. It would have only been in Maria's mind, as planted by Henry, that Fanny actually hoped to marry him.
