I really think this is getting OT but IMO Edward wasn't "given to another family". He was adopted by his uncle and aunt... not legally becuase there was no such thing but in the sense of goign to live with them on a permanent basis and being considered as their heir. He still saw a good deal of his own family and I think that the Austens were sensible of the fact that he woudl be well provided for, and that his uncle and aunt loved him. it wasn't as if he was beign sent to a baby farm...or a wicked step mother....
