Fanny and hte Austens   Written by Bridget D (10/23/2010 3:35 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Thank you for clarifying Mr. Nokes's guesstimates, penned by KatharineW
Are you new?

If I recall correctly there aren't many mentions of George in the family letters but this is not that surprising, since disabilty was often considered something that was hushed up. As for Edward Knight, he's often mentioneded in the family letters etc and Jane stayed iwht him and his wife before she and the others moved to Chawton cottage...where Jane spent her last years. So Im not sure if you are referring to him in Mr Noakes' "guesstimates" but IMO there's no reason to "guess" all htat much about Edward since he certainly didn't "disappear".

I beleive that it took a few years before he offered them Chawton but there may have been reasons for that - I beleive that he also had problems wtih the estate, of someone else trying to claim it..

It would be in the highest degree unlikely that he would "abandon" his family...

to retrun to MP, Fanny's situation of being apart from her birth family wasn't all THAT unusual at the time and had hte Bertrams been better carers and treated her more as one of hte family she would have been considered very fortunate. Even as things stood, she had a better education than she would have had at Portsmouth and as it turned out, better marital prospects.

To return to MP,
