I agree that Henry is not redeemable, the loss of Fanny is his punishment in the same way that the loss of Marianne was the punishment for Mr. Willoughby. JA does not get villains exonerated. This time around I was struck by the parallels with Dangerous Liaisons, because we discussed Mary manipulating people like Marquise de Merteuil. I have read comparisons of Dangerous Liaisons with Lady Susan and with Sense and Sensibility (because the latter was originally in the epistolary form), but never heard anybody connecting it to Mansfield Park. So it is interesting to view Mansfield Park as the english answer to French novel of the time. The villain also gets punished by the loss of his beloved.
