Its only a partial motive, but there is a hint that Maria felt a desire to make Fanny lose what she had lost (ie: any hope of marriage to Crawford). This might have added urgency to her cause (although it can only be a contributing factor as there is already the unpleasantness of Mrs Rushworth senior, and the threats of her maid, and the anger of Mr Rushworth, and the interference of Mr Harding, and the imminent arrival of her father, formidable enough to send Julia scuttling to Scotland.)
