May have figured it out   Written by Barb JA (10/19/2010 9:05 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, A question, penned by Barb JA
Are you new?

I was reading your link "on Caroline Lamb" and found where Byron's friend, Hobhouse, was trying to get him to leave London

. Hobhouse, still fearful of a potential elopement, again persuaded him to leave, this time for Harrow. They were to leave Wednesday 29 July, for Caroline had threatened to visit alone on that day. Such a visit would have been disastrous for them both. An affair conducted with a modicum of restraint and discretion could be tolerated, but no lady could appear alone at a man's house without societal repercussions.
And that Lady Caroline did show up
every soul in the house servants & all knew of the person in disguise, and not to endeavor to prevent the catastrophe of an elopement which seemed inevitable,

I guess this correlates to MP in that Maria placed herself in the power of a servant and Henry did elope with her, which inescapably made it all public.

So I guess maybe the extent of the exploits of Byron and his women weren't public till after their deaths and publishing of their letters?

I was surprised in that same link how the description of Byron sounds so much like Henry Crawford.
He could not be simply Caroline's lover, a participant in a scandalous (but tolerated) affair; he must be her grand passion, her true love - she must belong to him alone. But once she capitulated, he grew bored and irritated with her.

Thanks again Tarn for all of this information. I didn't realize before how much information you were linking at the bottom of your posts. Now I need to go back and look at those posts again.
