Mr Crawford's generosity would be above suspicion if he'd bestowed much of it in directions that had nothing to do with Fanny.

However, there's no Mrs Reynolds to pop up and give an independent account of what a jolly good fellow he is (à la Mr Darcy), and no Miss Dashwood to argue that what makes him so fine a gentleman is his constant goodness to everybody (à la Colonel Brandon in S+S1), so we're rather stuck with our doubts about his general benevolence.
