religion and Mary   Written by Bridget D (10/16/2010 7:04 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps something in-between, penned by Ramya
Are you new?

She does not say that its a degradation, though she does think of it as "stooping"... but I think that that ha more to do with her being unwilling to be comparatively poor as she thinks of it, and to have a rural life. Edmund says that he has no desire to beautify Thonrton Lacy and make it more of a gentleman's residence. He is willing to make do with his relatively small income.. He does ntot want to go into a profession which could make more money for him.

I dont think that it is necessarily a dislike of religion per se, but a fear of being (comparatively) poor and stuck away in the country all the time....And she alos interprets this as Edmund not caring for her, if he wotn consider going for the kind of life she woudl like to lead...
I dont know for sure if she has soemting more than "indiffernece" to religion, (wihch was common enough)... Possibly she is inclined to see clergymen as hypocritical, becuasse she's probalby known others besides Dr Grant who are lazy and selfish and not fit for their calling.. and I think that her fears of being "taken in" in marriage nad other relationships have a role here in making her nervous.
