in consequence of the missive, William's promotion, penned by Barb JA
Thinking some more about Henry's attitude and behaviour to Fanny, there's a big contrast with how he was in relation to Maria and Julia. With them he is very detached and emotionally disengaged. With Fanny he rather resembles a big, over-enthusiastic dog like some golden retrievers I have known. The sort that insists on jumping up at you with muddy paws, almost knocking you over in the process, whilst covering you in slobbery kisses and shedding hairs all over your best black velvet pants. Well-intentioned, but a lot of work to re-train.
Tales of a rake redeemed by the love of a good woman are a commonplace of popular romantic fiction. It's a nice fantasy but not one that I find particularly realistic, (one learns by experience!). If any author could pull off such a scenario convincingly, I reckon it would be JA.
