What if I never marry? What if I never find a girl who will look twice at me? Although not indicated in the text, I think all young people have these fears at some point (especially when those girls wouldn't even look at a midshipman!) He's not only looking out for Fanny, but also sees Fanny as some place "safe" for him.

Just thoughts... :o)
