As far as Henry adding a few lines to Mary's letters, I thought that this had eased into becoming a socially accepted way of a man getting around the letter writing taboo. I could be wrong though.
In any case, Mary's persuading Fanny to communicate by letter with her was a guise to serve an agenda for both of the Crawfords which Fanny had easily figured out.
