Contempt   Written by Barb JA (10/8/2010 7:42 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Multiple meanings, & worse than ridicule., penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

Johnson's Dictionary shows the meaning of ridicule to expose to laughter; to treat with contemptuous merriment. So yes, I think her ridicule does show contempt for Edmund.

It's one thing to ridicule folly, but to make a person the object of your ridicule is mean and not something you do to people you care about. Now Mrs. Norris, some needs to be thrown her way.

Why does Mary need to shut out the church, sink the clergyman? Does she really hate religion that much? It's funny that you mention the word omen. I'm reminded of evil Damien from The Omen who went ballistic when they tried to take him to church. ;) Bad joke, I know, but I couldn't resist.
