I think thtat "little better than a slave" is a slight exaggeration. Yes she's a poor relation.. Sir T intended to treat her on a more equl footing, but his resolution dind't last for as long as it should and F has sunk into being an unpaid companion.. but she is probably better off even as a penniless companion in Mansfield than she would be as a dowerless daughter in Portsmouth....
