would be enough to convince Fanny that she couldn't expect to be well-settled in marriage like her cousins. I am reminded of the treatment Jane Fairfax recieved from her benefactors. They were also preparing her for a life of "mediocrity" and hardship by training her as a governess, but in day-to-day practise, they treated her like a daughter.

The Bertrams, on the other hand, have treated Fanny as little better than a slave. With all the subtle and open references to slavery in MP, I don't think it is a conincidence at all. To top it all, Fanny is actually related by blood to most of them. Argh!
