The treatment of women was deplorable since they were viewed as inferior creatures.
Miss Austen is so admirable because her heroines are justly portrayed striving for equality in all respects with their male counterparts......in direct opposition to the mores of the day.
HOWEVER....that is why we read the book: To see if Sir Thomas finally learns and grows out of his failings.
Finally, patting myself on the back.......My wife and I are "partners" in marriage and that's one of the reasons we have succeeded for 40 years. Marriage is NOT a dictatorship!
