Mary's selfishness and unreasonableness   Written by Erica (10/4/2010 10:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Very bad listeners, penned by Barb JA
Are you new?

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement regarding the unreasonableness of trying to make a loved one change professions, unless there are health or legal/moral ethical reasons involved. Like many of us, Edmund *must* earn his living, and he must do it in a way that will allow him to earn enough to support a family in some degree of comfort. Unlike us, his choices of "acceptable" careers for his social class are quite limited. He has already prepared for a career that meets those criteria. It's preposterous to expect him to do otherwise than what he is doing.

Mary has certainly not thought things through very well. Even IF he were to decide to go into the law, or the Army, as others have pointed out, it would be years before he would be in a position to marry. Would she be willing to wait? Would she be willing to deal with the absences such a change of plans would entail? Would she be willing to deal with Sir Thoms's anger and disappointment?
