he had come down a bit harder on Mrs. Norris about the play. She managed to dodge him quite well there, but he still should have been more firm.

Otherwise, yes, indeed, gold stars for him here! I think time away gave him time to think. I understand his desire for quiet time with his family. After having been away and busy for so long, I'm sure his desire was simply for monotony for a while, even if no one else was all that happy with it.
