I agree with you, Rachel. I dont say that Maria Tom and Julia are wonderful people - clearly they are not, but I dont think that they are monstrous either. I think that their desire for some fun and society rather than "the home circle" does not in itself seem dreadful to me...

it seems to me natural that girls of M and J's age shoudl prefer a bit of liveliness, balls and parties, to sittng around each night feeling nervous that Sir T is disapproving of soemthing or other -.

the fact that he's not usually loud and angry in his disapproval does not make it less deadly...
