but surely one reason he is attracted to Mary is that she IS lively and fun, even if not always morally perfect. I think that Edmund IS suffering a litlte from "dullness" of MP. Fanny whose expectations of entertainment are low, does not regret the loss of things being more "lively" especially as she disapproved of the play and was afraid of being pushed into acting.. and I think that she also has her agenda in that the play and the "fun things" going on took Edmund away from her and forced her to see his faults and forced her mroe and more to see him courting Mary....
