Thank you for this Robbin. I really enjoyed reading your post.

I would only add that the quiet pleasures of home are rather like solitude - delightful when chosen, but oppressive when forced upon you. I agree that the selfishness we see in Tom, Maria and Julia makes it harder for them to tolerate the quiet life Sir Thomas prefers. I just think that such a quiet existence could be very frustrating to a person of a sociable temperament, even if they were not driven by selfish or improper desires.
