We know that she is fuelled by indignation, and has never spoken so angrily to anyone. Instead of letting rip with a high octane paragraph, Fanny being Fanny, she just averts her face and speaks in a firmer tone than usual. No histrionics - she just says what she means and means what she says:
“As far as I am concerned, sir, I would not have delayed his return for a day. My uncle disapproved it all so entirely when he did arrive, that in my opinion everything had gone quite far enough.”
It's so effective. I'd say it's so cool - but there's no artifice or calculation about her response, and she is anything but cool; afterwards she is blushing and trembling at her own daring.
I really feel like cheering for her here.
You tell him Fanny! Atta girl!!!
