"Les Liaisons Dangereuses" was a French epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, first Published in 1782.

I'm not sure whether JA would have read this novel or when it was first translated into English. There have been numerous adaptations for film and other media. The Wikipedia page is linked below.

(Off topic: The tale was adapted for the theatre by Christopher Hampton. It ran on Broadway in 1986 with the role of Valmont played by.... Alan Rickman! Fans self!!!)
