Are you new?

In the quote you gave from Ch 4, if I'm reading it properly, it seems by the same rule of moral obligation is saying that it's Maria has a moral obligation to have more money than her father and to have a house in town. Is this one of those narrator slips into character instances? Seems like an ironic statement to me.

Any thoughts?
