In a thread lower down, I was surprised that Maria doesn't accept her father's offer for her to be released from her engagement to Mr. Rushworth. After all, that was the desperate thought that formed at the time Henry is holding her hand to his heart. Henry inadvertently (or not) planted that thought in her head, and her alternative at that moment seemed awful.
But the timing of it... the fact is that her father did give her authorization to break her engagement with Mr. Rushworth. That was one of the difficulties she would have faced. Was Henry not a respectable-enough man? Respectable enough for Sir Thomas? Don't know that (yet.) Henry could be like a Lucy Steele... stealing into anyone's heart with flattery to make everything work...
