Edmund is clearly exaggerating for effect here. I took it mean a play in the German language would be even harder to perform than doing a play in English. I don't know if the people in Regency learnt German, as well as French as part of the "modern languages" alluded to by Caroline Bingley. And even if they did, would they be true proficients? ;-)
If we do not outdo Ecclesford, we do nothing.
