in consequence of the missive, No, not creep-mouse, penned by Robbin
When I first read this novel years ago, I didn't think very well of Fanny for making such a fuss about what seemed like a small thing. It's only as I've gotten older that I've realized what maturity it takes to act according to your own principles instead of someone else's, especially under such pressure!
That's a great point about Tom's hypocrisy. Definitely highlights the contrasts between him and Fanny, with such a difference in their reasons for refusal. The notion of living by one's principles instead of one's pleasures is one that seems to be somewhat foreign to many of the characters.
