Modest theatricals vs. extravaganzas?   Written by Barb JA (9/24/2010 8:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Theatricals: Impropriety & more Whiggery., penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

I understand Austen's own family acted amongst themselves. Tom and Edmund talk of reciting plays as youngsters. Would these be more a long the lines of modest family theatricals?

Lovers' Vows being played at MP is obviously an outrageous extravaganza.

I'm also ignorant of Jane Austen's and her family's political leanings. Can anyone shed some light here? I'm guessing this might be beyond the scope of the GR, so I understand if this question needs to moved. I can imagine she would happily skewer any political thought if she saw fit.
