"Very stupid fellow" sounds to me more like something Maria, for example, would say. When Edmund thinks it, perhaps he's using the expression indirectly? as in "Maria & Co are going to a lot of trouble to cultivate the acquaintance as things stand, but if he weren't rich, it's more likely that they wouldn't make the effort, and would instead refer to him as a VSF."
