I think there's something more than just discomfort at being the center of attention and stage fright. There's a metaphor here for Fanny's essential sincerity. At bottom, acting is a form of licensed falseness or insincerity. Fanny CANNOT act, meaning she can't tell a lie, play a part, be other than who she is.
We might check in future chapters whether this metaphor plays out with others: which are good actors (good at portraying themselves as other than they are) and which are not?
