It baffles me as to why Edmund continues to put up with Mary's insulting opinions on the church and clergymen in general. Poor Edmund must be pretty-well blinded by Mary's charms to continue to overlook her assaults on his chosen profession!

As I mentally evaluated this particular incident, I wished that Fanny would give Edmund a good poke in the ribs with her elbow and whisper something like "Don't just stand there and take that, defend yourself!"
