Yes, a formal ball wasn't necessary. But would a baronet's daughter be out without one? Wouldn't Lady Bertram want that her daughters had their coming-out balls? (And as they would take place at Mansfield Park, they would not mean much effort to her)

The point in Mia's post was that Maria and Julia were too young when their father left, so they haven't come out yet. As you said, at 18 and 19 they are old enough to be out, and they could already have had their balls when Sir Thomas went to Antigua, even if JA doesn't tell us about it.
