I dont entirely agree. Edmund does take his vocation more seriously than many clergy at the time. He admits that hte fact that there was a living for him had some influence but it wasn't the only factor. and later he will show that he intends to live properly as a clergyman in his parish...rather than just riding over to take the sunday services...
