there is this part that I simply cannot understand. Edmund says: I believe it often happens that a man, before he has quite made up his own mind, will distinguish the sister or intimate friend of the woman he is really thinking of more than the woman herself.. Chap. 12

I mean, whaattt? That sounds like something Emma would say! Why on earth would a man of sense do that? Edmund come across as too naive here. Either that or he has really weird friends.
