run very different, don't they? You could see that Mary could read Tom alright, since she knew her type, and she didn't mind it, especially the monetary part of it, I expect. And Tom could read Mary a bit already, and didn't want to get trapped so he left for a while, leaving Mary's pleasing manners to Edmund. She, not realizing that Edmund although from a rich family was to become a clergyman. But she already I think she thought she had caught him and perhaps could convince him to think twice about that... I have to wonder if the navy or a man of the church would be worse for Mary, from what she has stated and we've observed so far. I am not sure what she would have against the church at this point, except for the experience she's already witnessed and/or participated in her uncle and brother's society, which while we don't know all of it, can suspect from her puns are not all that innocent. Tom can read Mary and Edmund, after resting away, and since he must have gotten a vaccine for women early on...
