Sorry, I still don't see the humor Written by Laurel (9/20/2010 11:03 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Wry humor, penned by Barb JA

There are certainly a few funny lines here and there (I particularly like Mary Crawford's, "...resting fatigues me"), but I fail to find much to laugh at in the Sotherton visit for the reasons you cite above - it is showing most of the characters at their worst.

However, I would by no means suspend any pleasure of yours, so I shall simply agree to disagree about the overall humor in the situation. :-)
