From Ch 4:

"......Admiral Crawford was a man of vicious conduct, who chose, instead of retaining his niece, to bring his mistress under his own roof...."

As a young woman of impressionable age, I would think this would be one (but not entirely all) of the contributing factors influencing Mary's opinion of marriage.
