If the very thought of doing Lovers' Vows is shocking some I can't imagine that they are not shocked with Mary's comment.

I also don't think (as you have also mentioned) that men discussed or talked about such topics with their sisters, as many think JA's naval brothers would have done with her and Cassandra.
