I was thinking about the scenes in S&S with Willoughby and Marianne, but that fits in with your explanation, in that they were spending time alone way too often.

And I agree that Maria is endangering herself and/or Mr. Crawford is animating her to endanger herself, which in and of itself is very questionable.

In this scene, I think everybody except Mr. Rushworth, his mother and Fanny has their own personal agenda, that can not always be known to all of the other. To me, this again shows the great talent JA had.
