It is absolutely hilarious that Mrs. Norris is so busy "spunging" pheasant eggs, cheese, and heath that she fails to keep an eye on her charges. Her principle reason for being there was to act as chaperon, not to collect largess!

Speaking of operas, I could imagine (as you suggest) the comedy that could be staged with poor Fanny sitting on that bench with these characters coming and going around her. When I am done with the reread, I'll have to check out one of the film versions to see how the Sotherton excursion scenes were shot.
