That's my interpretation too. Written by Reeba (9/19/2010 11:50 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Jokes, penned by Bridget D

No matter what, I don't think it was meant to be referring to homosexuality.

The pun is on vices, and of course it was considered coarse to go punning like that about the vices of your uncle among strangers at their dining table.

Modern readers tend to put in their sensibilities when reading, IMO.
