I think that Mary's joke (which Austen herself as a Georgian woman and hte sister of sailors was probably aware could be taken as referring to "rum s0d&my and the lash" in the Navy) wasn't actually "meant" to be so crudely interpreted. I think that it was a private joke of Austens, but all Mary meant was referring to the "Vices" of top Navy men, of which she's well aware.. in hte sense of their not being very worthy men... not the cruder type of pun...
