I cant' see what is hard to understand about it. Edmund is a young man, he has emotions and hormones like other men. He has never met anyone like Mary before... She is pretty, charming witty lively. She is daring, compared with the girls he has problably previously known and while she often shocks him, she also stimulates him

It is IMO a sign of how dull Mansfield is, that the inhabitants are nearly all ready to fall for the Crawfords as new and exciting people to see and talk to....

Truth is that Edmund is problaby bored with his dull life and hte limited types of people that it offers to him, even if in the end he settles back into it..
