in consequence of the missive, What does Mary think of herself?, penned by Mia I.
It's obvious in this whole scene that Mary has a very skeptical view of marriage, with all her talk of being 'taken in'. This comment reinforces that - if English wiles and trickery can't take in Henry, it must be that they're not quite wily enough.
Perhaps it also shows that she doesn't know many truly genuine girls, if she doesn't know how a man can fall for someone without being coaxed and tricked.
