character is Thackeray's Vanity Fair, where one of the students at the finishing school where Amelia and Becky board is the natural daughter of a planter and a slave woman. As the only heir of the planter, she is very wealthy and has been sent to England to be educated. But I see nothing of this in the Crawfords and can't figure out where you came up with the idea.
