Nicki, I think you bring up a really good point about people only seeing what they look for - that is, one's perception of the value of something depends on your criteria. Mrs Norris, preoccupied as she is with money, status, etc judges the tree based solely on its monetary value. Dr Grant, with his discerning palate, judges based on the quality of the fruit.

I think it's a pretty important theme in the novel, thinking about the way the various character estimate one another (ie how well do the characters see each other for what they really are?)
