Just doing the arithmetic, it sounds like the lawyer uncle has estimated a nice round ten thousand as the dowry Sir Thomas deserves to marry.

Another example of that rounding is Augusta Hawkins's dowry of so many thousands as would always be called ten in Emma ch22.
