As for Fanny, her constant crying does seem "characteristic of or befitting an infant".

Just discovered mentioning the horse-bit is not a spoiler, as it's in ch. 7, where Edmund defends his action by claiming "there is more than time enough for my cousin to ride twice as far as she ever goes" (i.e. Fanny is a wimp and Mary Crawford already a better horsewoman)and addressed to MC: "You have been promoting her comfort by preventing her setting off half an hour sooner" - isn't that mean rather than dense, to twist the truth like that, to her face?
